Logical Song

The Logical Song story of… idealism lost”

Steve B.

Now, I do not think of you every day, but every now and again. Especially when “The Logical Song” comes ’round in iTunes, then my gray matter erupts with its somewhat shaky synapses, forming the memory traces which links this song to memories bringing them to my consciousness.

We are riding along, somewhere along a road between the base and “Specchiollaville”. You pop in the cassette of “Breakfast in America”, and I hear the “Logical Song” for the first time again and all the memories that come along with it.

So, I am sharing these lyrics (below), as they remind me of those illogical, and somewhat tremulous times, we had and shared, while we were stationed at San Vito dei Normanni Air Station, Italy. For those interested it was located in the southern part of the region of Apulia, and its province of Brindisi, Italy. I believe it is inactive now, the Elephant Cage torn down, and what is left of the base is only in caretaker status.

Hope others can relate to the song, in one way or another, and enjoy their thoughts.

Steve, where ever you are, I Hope you are doing well.
Wondering if you got hitched to that English Girl?

Your Pal,
Then and Now,

Mike

“The Logical Song”
written by Songwriters: Davies, R; Hodgson, R.
from Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America” Album,

When I was young
It seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees
Well they’d be singing so happily
Joyfully, playfully watching me

But then they send me away
To teach me how to be sensible
Logical, responsible, practical
And then they showed me a world
Where I could be so dependable
Clinical, intellectual, cynical

There are times when all the world’s asleep
The questions run too deep for such a simple man
Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned?
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am

I say, “Now what would you say for they calling you a radical
Liberal, fanatical, criminal?”
Won’t you sign up your name? We’d like to feel you’re
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable
Oh, ch-ch-check it out yeah

At night when all the world’s asleep
The questions run so deep for such a simple man
Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned?
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am
Who I am, who I am, who I am

‘Coz I’m feeling so illogical
D-d-digital
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Unbelievable
B-b-bloody marvelous
